This original knotwork design painting is a modern interpretation of the beardpuller motif. Traditionally shown with only two figures, this design incorporates eight figures intertwined and pulling on each other's beard and legs. The ancient Picts played games of strength and endurance by squatting in a precariously balanced position and pulling on each others beards. The loser lost his balance or yelled in pain. Incorporated as part of the overall design are spirals, an art motif found in many examples of early Celtic artwork. The blue key work on the bodies of the figures refer back to the ancient Picts who used to dye their skin blue using Woad. The entire design is surrounded by a patterning of dots, a traditional Celtic motif. This is the third mandala in the Celtic Mandala Series.
