This original metaphysical painting portrays the transformation of the self as it progresses towards enlightenment. The woman portrayed in the painting is preparing to cross the bridge of enlightenment but in the first image (at the right), she is not yet facing the task. She is obsessed with the disappointments she has faced in life. In effect, she is still facing them and until she can put that behind her, she will not be able to move forward. Her face is hard and lined to represent rock, cold and unchanging. The window over her head represents all the things that she cannot access while she is frozen in one position, wallowing in regret. The birds represent nature, the piano, the arts. There is no music on the pages and the birds are faded. In the second position, in the middle of the bridge, the woman is tearing away the mask of grief. The act is painful, represented by the blood, but notice that the bird nearest her is beginning to take form. In effect, by putting herself through the painful process of working through her disappointments and moving beyond them, she is giving life to the world around her. In the final position, at the bottom of the bridge, she is free of constraint, even time cannot hold her. Snow and flowers sprinkle down on her from a clear blue sky. Otters, the symbol of joy and playfulness, accompany her. One otter is playing the flute – music is with her, and the other holds a mirror in which the Pleiades are caught in reflection – the arts and mystery walk by her side. The bridge is made of water to represent the movements of the mind. Two dragons entwine the water – they are the dangers we encounter when we live for anger and grief. Notice that the woman, in the final image is completely untroubled by the presence of these creatures while the first one is exactly where the head of one of the dragons should be. The first woman is at the head of grief. Beneath the water, the dark blue sky of the crone reigns. Traditionally, the wisdom of the old was represented by the color dark blue and stars in this field represented enlightenment or wisdom. The eclipse in the sky represents change. The figures on the rock show the ties to time and tradition. This is the eighth painting in the Metaphysical / Tarot Series.
